November 09, 2020

Forget mass-produced coffee chains that offer little in the way of personality or good coffee – small, local coffee shops not only serve up java that has gotten a little more care, but serve it with small-town hospitality. While you’re away from home, you may be missing your favorite little spot to grab your daily cup of joe, but we’re here to let you in on some of Rapid City’s best destinations for getting some superb coffee and scrumptious eats!

Harriet & Oak

If you’re in the mood to kick back in a cozy café with a rustic, vintage-y vibe with a cup of fresh roasted coffee and a tasty bite to eat, Harriet & Oak is the place to be! Featuring a VW van parked inside, the coffeehouse has plenty of tables, both large and small, that are perfect for a coffee date or an afternoon study group. Their delectable breakfast and lunch menu offers a little something for everyone, including gluten-free and vegetarian options. The location also lends the ideal opportunity for a quick stop while checking out the shopping and entertainment downtown Rapid City has to offer, making this a must-stop during your stay!

Dunn Brothers

Located in the historic Landstrom building in west Rapid City, Dunn Brothers has gained a local following that come back again and again for their coffee, which is roasted in small batches. The interior’s clean, open design give the coffee shop a modern feel, while maintaining an atmosphere where you feel at home. Their food menu adds to this home-like ambiance, with fresh breakfast and lunch sandwiches, wraps and salads that feel like they were made just for you. Bonus: Dunn Brothers is located in the same building as Dakota Point Brewing, a local favorite for craft beers.

Essence of Coffee

Essence of Coffee only sources coffee beans grown under very specific conditions, giving them the ultimate control over the quality they serve, and it shows! The café, nestled in a great central location close to downtown, also dishes up hearty breakfast classics and lunch options that include fluffy pancakes, apple and sausage hash and balsamic steak. Make sure you purchase a bag of their fresh roasted coffee to take home!

Alternative Fuel

While you’re checking out Rapid City’s hub for shopping, dining and entertainment, Main Street Square, be sure to stop into Alternative Fuel and grab coffee that was roasted right here in the Black Hills, a refreshing fruit smoothie or something yummy to nibble on off of their food menu! Bask in the sun and people watch by enjoying your treat on the patio, which offers plenty of seating. During ice-skating season, they even serve up hot drinks out of their walk-up window, allowing you the convenience of skating up for a beverage without removing your skates.

Pure Bean

Ranked as the best coffee in South Dakota by USA Today, Pure Bean boasts rich, flavorful coffee for a great cause – all of the profits from their single origin coffee beans go to a regional organization that supports those in need. However, no matter which of their coffees you choose, rest assured that you’re supporting a coffee shop that has a passion for their brews! Pure Bean is also located close to downtown, in the Creamery Building, and is kitty corner to another of Rapid City’s beloved local businesses: Armadillo’s Ice Cream Shoppe.
