November 09, 2020

Winter is the season of preparation! You’re preparing for the holidays and family gatherings, baking every type of sweet treat to spread some holiday cheer, and attending parties left and right. But what about time for yourself? We’ve put together a few fun ideas for you to enjoy yourself while in Rapid City this winter. Check out our list and take advantage of some winter celebrations going on in Rapid City during January!

Professional Hockey Game
Who doesn’t love the adrenaline rush that comes with attending a sports game every so often? Rapid City is proud to have their very own ECHL team, the Rush. Rapid City Rush competes at their home arena of Rushmore Plaza Civic Center all season long until April. They have 12 games scattered throughout the month of January and ticket prices drop to as low as $10, with the puck drop at 7:05 PM. So grab your tickets and enjoy a hockey game filled with passionate fans and an experience that you will never forget! Purchase your Rapid City Rush tickets online here.

Ice Skating Under the Stars
It’s always a party in downtown Rapid City! Located in the middle of downtown, Main Street Square covers up the green park with an outdoor ice rink during the winter months for people to enjoy a fun day (or night) of ice skating! On January 11th from 6:00 to 9:00 PM, the ice skating rink will be surrounded by bright lights and loud music for Lights on the Ice, hosted by Central High School’s student council. Dance the night away for $5 for children and $6 for adults, tickets are sold at the rink. This is an all-ages event, so bring your family, friends, or that special someone to attend this skate party under the lights!

Black Hills Stock Show and Rodeo
Last but not least, it’s a must to recommend to you an annual staple event for this community. The Black Hills Stock Show and Rodeo (BHSSR) is a week-long event that takes place at the Central States Fairgrounds. During the week of January 25th through February 3rd, cowboys and cowgirls from all across the country gather in Rapid City to compete in cattle shows, ranch rodeos, and horse events. BHSSR is open to the public, and has free and paid events that range between $5 and $30. Times for these events are scattered throughout each day, with the majority of the events beginning in the morning. Fun for the whole family, BHSSR is an event you don’t want to miss out on. Snag your tickets online here and enjoy watching cowgirls and cowboys like you’ve never seen them before!

It’s easy to enjoy a vacation in Rapid City with everything our community has to offer in the month of January. After an exhilarating day of ice skating, cheering on the Rapid City Rush, or even witnessing one of the Stock Show events, return to the comfort of your Quality Inn room to relax and rejuvenate!
