5 Ways to Beat the Black Hills Heat

While August is one of the best months to visit South Dakota, it is often one of the hotter months as well!  So, how can you enjoy a relaxing, fun, and unique vacation to the Black Hills with such high temperatures? Check out the list we’ve compiled of five ways for you to beat the Black Hills heat this August!

Pactola Lake

Sometimes it’s so nice outside that we feel guilty for not enjoying the weather, even if it is a tad too hot. If you feel the same way, take a quick scenic drive through the hills to Pactola Lake, which is a quick 30 minute ride from Quality Inn & Suites. As one of the most scenic and perfect places to cool off, this lake provides a sandy beach, pontoon rentals, camp sites, hiking trails around the lake, various picnic areas, cliff diving, and a marina with homemade ice cream dilly bars and a variety of other goodies just in case you may have forgot sunscreen or a swimsuit. If you decided to take a dip in the refreshing waters at Pactola, be sure to ask about the historic town of Pactola that is now at the bottom of the lake that attracts fishermen, divers, and locals each year.

The Journey Museum

Did you know the largest preserved T-rex was found in the Black Hills? The Journey Museum should be added to your itinerary if you’re interested in dinosaurs (we all secretly are), geology, Native American history, or even the pioneer times. Since 1997, this museum and learning center holds learning as a high priority while also keeping it fun for visitors of all ages. The Journey Museum can also take you through space with their NASA supported Planetarium, so if you’re trying to see what Saturn looks like up close, then this is the place to be!

Roosevelt Park Ice Arena

If you really need to cool down, spend some time in a chilly environment at the Roosevelt Park Ice Arena for some indoor ice skating. Yes, we did just suggest for you to go ice skating in the summer. Open skate is on Friday and Saturdays, with $6 admission and $4 skates. This is the perfect place to really escape the heat and have a brief moment of cooler temperatures in August!

Indoor pool

Itching to swim but don’t want to deal with the sun? Take a dip right here at Quality Inn & Suites! Just a short walk from the comfort of your room, you have access to our indoor swimming pool where everyone in the family can have some fun in the water. Even if it’s hot outside, you can still hop in the hot tub to finish the day with a relaxing soak.

Silver Lining Creamery

Last but not least, and our favorite way of beating the Black Hills heat, is by indulging in some premium, small batch ice cream. Silver Lining Creamery is located in Downtown Rapid City in Main Street Square. With new, fresh flavors every day, Silver Lining is a local favorite. Have you ever thought about trying dill pickle ice cream? Now’s your chance! They create unique ice cream flavors in-house and have a wide variety of toppings to craft your dream sundae.

No matter which way you like to beat the heat in the midst of a hot summer day in August, head back to your air conditioned hotel room at Quality Inn & Suites to relax.
