What to Do In & Around Rapid City?

Wondering what to do during your stay here in Rapid City? There are a lot of excellent options, including a visit to Custer State Park, Mount Rushmore, Crazy Horse, or even the nearby Badlands. Rapid City is conveniently located between most everything there is to do here on the western side of South Dakota.

Mount Rushmore & Crazy Horse

If you’re visiting South Dakota for the first time, then you’ve got to stop and see both the Mount Rushmore and Crazy Horse memorials. Whether or not you’re patriotic, you might be surprised by the beauty of these famous mountain sculptures and the surrounding Black Hills National Forest.  

Even if you’re arriving at night, you can still stop by and see Mount Rushmore, since it is illuminated each evening until 9pm.

There’s also an excellent museum at Mount Rushmore where you can stop and learn more about these four historic men: George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Teddy Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln.

Custer State Park

The park is open year round, 24 hours a day, so no matter when you’re visiting it’s a good idea to drive through Custer. In addition to seeing the abundant wildlife and hiking the beautiful trails, there are also five lakes inside the park you can enjoy including Center Lake, Legion Lake, Stockade Lake, Sylvan Lake, and the Game Lodge Pond. Also, if you’re into rock climbing, there are plenty of great spots in the park where rock climbing is permitted. And depending on when you’re planning to visit, you may be able to catch the annual buffalo roundup at Custer State Park, which has become a beloved regional tradition. 

Custer State Park is over 100 square miles of scenic drives, beautiful wildlife, and gorgeous scenery.

Deadwood & Sturgis

Located just a short drive away from Rapid City are the historical cities of Deadwood and Sturgis, two small towns with a lot to offer. If you’re visiting in the summer months, especially during August, then you’ll definitely want to visit the famous Sturgis Motorcycle Rally in Sturgis. Bikers from all over the country gather in Sturgis every August. You can stop by to see some truly amazing custom motorcycles, and enjoy great food, shopping, and live music.

Deadwood is just a short drive from Sturgis. It’s primarily a gambling town known for its rich history, like the legendary Wild Bill Hickok and the gold rush. There’s a lot of excellent dining and lovely views in Deadwood too. You can even visit the Historic Adams House, a Victorian mansion with its original features still intact.

Outdoor Adventures

Whether you’re into hiking, biking, fishing, off-roading, or hunting, there are plenty of outdoor adventures to suit anyone’s interests. Rapid City, SD is surrounded by some of the best hiking trails and sight-seeing opportunities this country has to offer.

If you’re feeling especially adventurous, you might consider the George S. Mickelson Trail. This is a 109 mile trail from Deadwood to Edgemont featuring 100+ bridges and 15 different trail heads. The George Mickelson Trail is open year round, and it’s the perfect adventure for avid mountain bikers, or serious hikers.
